Vent selection and installation should account for appliance type and input, flue-gas temperature, operating pressure, condensate conditions, required diameter, total developed length, fittings, vertical rise, horizontal runs, termination location, and applicable clearances. Supports, penetrations, expansion provisions, drainage, and termination components should be coordinated as part of the complete system rather than treating the vent as individual pieces of pipe.

The Challenge
The Rockefeller Group faced a significant challenge with 1271 Avenue of the Americas, a historic building in midtown New York City that required a modern air quality solution. Despite the building’s historic nature, the goal was to improve overall indoor air quality (IAQ) while achieving operational cost savings and reducing the carbon footprint. The existing system included 38 air handling units (AHUs) serving 48 stories, moving 1 million CFM across four mechanical floors. The AHUs were equipped with MERV 15 filter arrays, which, while effective, did not meet the Rockefeller Group’s vision for world-class IAQ.
The Solution
To address this challenge, the Rockefeller Group partnered with Gil-Bar and HealthWay to design and implement a comprehensive retrofit solution. This involved installing HealthWay Inline air purification modules featuring their proprietary Disinfecting Filtration System (DFS) technology. A total of 660 HealthWay inline modules were installed, replacing the existing filter racks with HealthWay 1000/2000 modular arrays. This new setup was designed to enhance air filtration without the drawbacks typically associated with higher filtration levels, such as restricted airflow and increased energy demands.
The Outcome
The retrofit of 1271 Avenue of the Americas was a resounding success, marking it as the largest building in New York to utilize HealthWay DFS technology. Third-party testing showed that the DFS technology removed 99.93% of 0.3-micron particles in a single pass, significantly improving IAQ. Additionally, the HealthWay DFS filters reduced the pressure drop to 0.205” wc, compared to 0.550” wc with the previous MERV 15 filters, easing the demand on the fan motors and significantly cutting energy use. As a result, the Rockefeller Group reported a 60% reduction in fan energy consumption, illustrating both cost efficiency and environmental benefits.
